Isipathana College played fast open rugby to down S.Thomas’ College 33-17 in a key quarter final match of the Milo inter-school knockout Tournament at Royal College Sports Complex yesterday.
The winning team’s fly half Prasad Devinda made the difference in the score look huge with his ability to take the right options. Isipathana collected their points through four tries, two conversions and a drop goal while S.Thomas’ responded with two tries, two conversions and a penalty.
The Thomians tackled well at the start, but were foxed when Devinda used his kicking skills well which resulted in U.D Fonseka and Sajid Suhaib scoring one each in the first half. Both players followed high kicks into the Thomian half and scored. Full back Malik Jumat fired two penalties and manned the last line of defence well. The only occasions when the Isipathana defence bungled were when Thomian centre Anurudhdha Willawara sliced through twice, once in each half. Dewin Jayasinghe kicked right a penalty for the Thomians in the first half. Isipathana led 20-10 at half time.
The second half again belonged to Isipathana whose three quarters looked very sharp when the forwards won the ball and made it available.
Devinda gave Isipathana three points when he dropped a peach of a goal with the second half 19 minutes old.
Both teams gave away two yellow cards each, but S.Thomas’ were often found wanting of maintaining discipline on the field.
Isipathana sealed the game when Suhaib ran through to score when the team received a penalty deep in the Thomian half. The flanker scored again just before referee D.Nimal blew no side.
Willawara scored the second try for S.Thomas’ when he took the ball over the line following a chip kick inside the Isipathana half.
