The Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association ( SLSRFA ) is to introduce drug tests for school rugby players which are to come into effect very soon.
The SLSRFA in this regard will be getting all the backing from three top specialists Dr. Maiya Gunasekerea, Dr. Geethanjana Mendis and Dr. Seevali who are all coming forward to make this a success. The estimated cost for the programme is said to be in the region of Rs two million which will be done with assistance coming from the minister of sports.
All schools will be compelled to give the names of their players before a game starts. The drug test will be done in the presence of the master in charge or the coach of the respective teams. Dr. Kuruppu said that they will be doing two tests during a match which will be either of three. That is before the match, during half time or after the match concludes.
Urine samples of the players will be taken and we will be starting with the ten teams playing in the Division 1A category and we hope to extend this to other categories. The SLSRFA will be looking forward for cooperation from all the school officials in this regard.
