Musaeus College, Colombo created a sort of history for themselves when they became girls Hockey Champions by defeating Seetha Devi Girls College, Kandy 1-0 in the finals of the National School Games Girls Hockey Championship organised by Education Ministry and played at the Nandimithra Ekanayake International Hockey Stadium, Matale on Monday.
This was Musaeus College's maiden hockey title at the National School fames during their 50 year's history. This was also their major hockey title. The finals turned out to be a gruelling and Seetha Devi Girls appeared to have edge as they missed as many as four potential chances of scoring due to some disjointed play. Even the penalty corners which came their way did not bear any fruit. Musaeus stickers too had their share of lapses as they missed scoring thrice.
The scores stood blank at the end of the regulation time. In keeping with the rules extra time of play was ordered. In the 4th minute of extra time Musaeus girls took play deep into Seetha Devi territory and a short pass by centre half Dinithi Sathyapala saw lift inside Ridmo Kamaradasa sound the boards and with that the match ended. Palitha Wasalage and Indika Jayawardena umpired. In the battle for the third place Sangamitta BV, Matale edged out Pushpadana Girls College 5-3 on penalty strokes after the match ended in a one all draw.
