With an outstanding performance of beach football, Bangladesh grabbed the gold medal when they defeated Sri Lanka 1-0 in a penalty shoot out while Sri Lanka had to satisfy with the silver medal.
The fans at jam-packed stands at the Hambantota Beach Football venue, could not ask for more from both teams in a match that was drawn in the full time with a goal sack of nine from each team, and finished the action packed extra three minutes with zero goals.A.B.M. Komal of Bangladesh put his team in the right track in the very first minute of the game. Sri Lanka captain Sellar netted the ball in the third minute to equalize.Komal went on to enjoy the final at his own wish by scoring a hat-trick of goals by the ninth minute of play. At the end of the first session Bangladesh were leading 4-1.The game got even more competitive as the scoreboard read six all by the whistle at the end of the second half, where Sri Lanka added another four goals while Bangladesh collected two. E. Hoque found the net to lead Bangladesh by 7-6 in the first minute of the third session but two minutes later Sri Lanka’s Pradeep Rodrigo came up with the equalizer. At full time, both teams had scored nine goals. Sri Lanka could not make the first four turns in the penalty shoot out while Towhidul Alam stole a goal from Sri Lankan keeper and Bangladesh grabbed the gold medal.
Lankan women in kabaddi final
After a thrilling semi-final, Sri Lanka qualified for the women’s beach kabaddi final where they will meet the strong Indians. Sri Lanka overcame Bangladesh 48-40 to reach the final in Hambantota.
At the early stage of the first half, Sri Lanka was leading and was in good control over their opponents until Bangladesh took their first time out when the score was 13-8.
With two successive points, followed by another three points, Bangladesh made a comeback to the game to lead 16-13. Soon after they took the second time out with a change of a player and then continued to dominate the hosts to end the first half at 25-20. Later the Lankan girls fought back hard to secure a podium finish.
Asian kabaddi champs lose
Pakistan qualified for the men’s Kabaddi final when they defeated their arch-rival India with a 15 point lead at Hambantota beach kabaddi court.
India, the Asian Beach Kabaddi Champions, desperately seeking to take control over Pakistan lost both halves by 13-24 and 19-23 to give Pakistan a 47-32 win at the final whistle.
It was a tough game for both teams. At one stage Vagir Singh of India was taken to hospital when he was bleeding due to an injury, when he tried to tackle an opponent player.
Soon afterwards two players, one from each team was suspended for engaging in an argument beyond discipline.
In the final Pakistan will meet the winners of the match between India and Sri Lanka which will be played today.
Javendra Singh opens Indian medal count
India’s Javendra Singh Baath became the first gold medalist in the First South Asian Beach Games when he showed collected 29.5 points in the individual Lance event in Equestrian on Saturday. Another Indian, Jasvinder Singh won the silver and Durbar Prasad of Nepal won the bronze.
Pathum – first medalist for Sri Lanka
Chen Merwin Roark of India collected the second gold for his country and Mandar Divase who is also from India won the silver in the 5km marathon swimming held in the Hambantota sea yesterday.
Meanwhile Pathum Edirisinghe who became third in the event registered his name as the first medalist for Sri Lanka.
Dhurba Prasad Ara won the gold medal in the Rings and Peg (equestrian) event while Jasvinder Singh grabbed the silver. The bronze medal went to Nepal again, when Khildhwat Khabka won the third place.
Equastrian and kabadi
Krishan Yadar of India won the gold medal in the Lemon and pey event in the equestrian while his teammate Jasvinder Singh Bhatt grabbed the silver. Sri Lankan Sarath Kumara won the bronze medal.
